You likely heard about the recent Blood Moon and Lunar Eclipse event. If you follow any mystical social media, you undoubtedly saw the numerous lectures and warnings that accompanied it, primarily advising everyone to skip charging crystals, collecting moon water, or harnessing the energy of this particular moon. I actually witnessed a young woman being scolded for realizing she had done the unthinkable: Charged her stones in the windowsill. Before I go off on one of my tangents about how grossly inaccurate this advice is, let me provide a brief summary of why so many right-hand path practitioners warn against these practices:
Amplified Energies: Blood moons and lunar eclipses are believed to intensify cosmic energies, creating an environment that can feel more turbulent or unpredictable. This surge in energy might lead to increased emotional reactions, confusion, or a lack of focus, which may not be ideal for the practice of white magick that relies on calm and balanced intention.
Transformation and Transition: Lunar eclipses symbolize significant changes and transitions. While these energies can be beneficial for letting go of old habits or negative influences, they may not align with the objectives of white magick practitioners, who typically seek to promote healing, protection, and positivity. Some may feel that the energies during these events could disrupt their specific goals.
Risk of Unintended Outcomes: There is a belief that the potent energies associated with a blood moon and eclipse can be easily misapplied or misunderstood, resulting in unforeseen consequences. This concern is especially relevant for those who may lack experience in working with such energies. As a precaution, practitioners may advise against charging crystals or gathering moon water during this time to avoid potential errors.
Focus on Cleansing Instead of Charging: During a blood moon or lunar eclipse, many practitioners suggest prioritizing the cleansing of crystals and tools rather than charging them. This approach aligns with the themes of release and renewal that characterize these lunar events, making it more suitable for those looking to clear out old energy and prepare for new beginnings.
This all appears to make sense on the surface, and I should stress that it does apply to those who adhere to a primarily positive and safe magickal practice—“white magick,” if you will. However, this is yet another example of the dogma that surrounds practitioners of alternative paths, or “black magick.” There are many reasons to utilize this particular moon if you are not afraid of playing with a little fire, and for those of us who often work with dark deities, spirits, and occasionally engage in questionable rituals. Let’s explore it from a different perspective:
Intensified Energies: The powerful energies present during a blood moon and lunar eclipse can be actively utilized for significant manifestations. For those practicing black magick or Demonolatry, this surge in energy can enhance their rituals, allowing for more concentrated intentions and potentially more effective outcomes. The charged environment acts as a powerful amplifier, propelling their work to new heights.
Catalysts for Change: Practitioners of voodoo and other magickal traditions that embrace transformation can find the symbolism of a lunar eclipse particularly advantageous. The energies at play during this time can facilitate deep, meaningful changes, making it an excellent moment to break old habits, summon new opportunities, or invoke personal growth. This transformative energy can be embraced as a tool to harness the darker aspects of existence and turn them into beneficial outcomes.
Empowerment Through Action: Instead of viewing the risks associated with intense energies as a concern, practitioners may perceive the dynamic energies of a blood moon and eclipse as an opportunity to assert their influence over their lives. This period can be empowering, encouraging practitioners to engage boldly with their practices, invoking spirits or forces that align with their intentions confidently, without fear of unintended effects.
Focusing on Empowerment Rather Than Purification: During a blood moon or lunar eclipse, many individuals involved in dark magick may prioritize charging their crystals and tools to harness the potent energies available. This approach aligns with their goals of gaining strength and enhancing their practices. By absorbing these intense energies, they can supercharge their spells and rituals, using the lunar event as an opportunity to fortify their tools for future endeavors rather than solely cleansing them.
Of course, this is a very simplistic way of explaining it. Let’s consider the moon’s association with witchcraft and even Demonolatry before the church influenced the dividing line between “black and white” in magick. As we often discuss here, this division's true cusp is not some ancient, unwritten law. Historically, the church has condemned those who followed lunar phases and astrology, labeling them as practitioners of witchcraft or demonic influence. This connection framed individuals who engaged in lunar-based rituals as being aligned with dark forces or demons, leading to widespread persecution. Consequently, the association of moon phases with Demonolatry not only highlights the spiritual significance of lunar energies but also reflects the historical stigma surrounding those who practiced such forms of magick, often viewed as threats to the established religious order.
Those of us who work with demons often tune our rituals to the phases of the moon. Demonolatry is intricately linked to moon phases due to the symbolic associations of the moon with divine feminine energy, intuition, and the subconscious. Practitioners often seek to connect with these lunar energies as they work with deities or spirits related to darkness and mystery. The cyclical nature of the moon reflects essential themes of life, death, and rebirth, allowing practitioners to align their rituals and spellwork with these natural rhythms to enhance their intentions. Each moon phase offers unique energies—such as new beginnings during the new moon and heightened manifestation power during the full moon—enabling Demonolators to strategically plan their practices.
Moreover, there are many different rituals and practices within “this side” of magick and spiritualism that undoubtedly benefit from such a powerful lunar event, myself included. When it comes to spirituality, we all choose our own paths. Despite what you may hear, there is no right or wrong way to practice magick. Each of us exists with our own set of boundaries, rules, and moral compasses. There is truly no reason to utilize fearmongering to push others into your corner. If your way were indeed the ideal way, then why not allow others to discover it on their own? Would everyone not gravitate toward a “right” path if it were, in fact, the one true way? To suggest otherwise—something I find myself saying daily—is to place oneself on the same power trip as those who condemned the practice of magick among our predecessors. Those who originally divided what was and was not “acceptable” magick and punished those who did not follow the established order. It’s simply a modern-day prerequisite for the witch trials of the 21st century, where the court of public opinion and “cancel culture” serve as your punishment.
Something to consider.
Be Blessed,
