When the Satanic Temple is mentioned, the typical reaction is often one of disdain, confusion, or simply a lack of awareness that such an organization exists. And, of course, in today's climate where everything is "the work of the devil," it tends to be an ill-received topic, depending on who you talk to.
I have always had a particular fondness for Satanists. Over the years, if I were to be stuck in a room with a Wiccan, a Heathen, and a kitchen witch, I'm going to leave and go find a Satanist. For the most part, they tend to be some of the most docile and genuinely thoughtful people I have ever met. Perhaps some of this stems from the frequent assumption that I am a Satanist myself. I'm not, by the way. As with everything, I collect information and knowledge that I apply to my own practical occult knowledge. And there's a lot of rich history and valuable information to be found within all belief systems, with Satanism being particularly interesting. But, that isn't why I'm here. I wanted to share some of the good work that the Satanic Temple is doing in our communities that you probably had no idea about.
There are quite a few community projects coming from the official headquarters of the Satanic Temple, located fittingly in Salem, Massachusetts. But there is one in particular I wanted to highlight, and of course, I'll include links and ways you can help.
"Menstruatin' with Satan"
When this first started popping up in my Facebook feed, I had to initially get past my own manic laughter because the art for these ads is absolutely spectacular. But, once you get past the catchy title and hilarious imagery, the cause itself is extremely important. According to UNWomen, "In the U.S., period poverty impacts an estimated 16.9 million women and 1 in 4 adolescents struggle with access to period products. Recent studies show this affects up to 1 in 3 teens, highlighting the pervasive nature of the issue, especially in lower-income households."
Feminine hygiene products, even the "cheap" ones, are too expensive. As an adult with an income, even I find myself choosing between preferred brands and what I can afford, depending on our ever-fluctuating finances. And that is the case right now with most American households. But, imagine being a young girl already going through one of the first important milestones of your life, and then having to deal with the frustration and embarrassment of not having something as basic as pads or tampons. And, even in today's "woke" society, periods are still a taboo topic that women struggle to talk about.
Several of the Temple's locations are hosting these "Menstruatin' with Satan" supply drives via Amazon wishlists. Here's what the Washington chapter posted:
"Many individuals in need struggle to afford these essential, yet rarely donated, products. TST Washington's 'Menstruatin' with Satan' campaign aims to help fill the gap by collecting menstrual products for Washington State shelters and charities, while also working to destigmatize menstruation."
Temple chapters across the United States are actively seeking donations, which are especially needed in shelters and low-income communities. I don't see why anyone would not be on board with this. If you want to help with this cause, the Satanic Temple Salem location actively shares all chapters' activities, so you can find one near you to donate to.
And while you're visiting their Facebook page, check out all of the other good they are doing in communities. They have after-school and summer programs for kids, community cleanup events, and host some really cool "night out" events. Be sure to find your local chapter to see what's happening near you.
Be Blessed,
Dena
